Best Dog Breeds for UAE Apartments (and How to Keep Them Fit in the Heat)

The best dogs for UAE apartments are small to medium, fairly calm, and cope reasonably well with heat. But any healthy dog can live happily in an apartment if it gets enough daily exercise, and in the UAE summer that exercise mostly has to happen indoors.

What makes a breed good for a UAE apartment?

  • Size: easy to carry in lifts and handle in corridors
  • Energy: moderate needs that indoor exercise can meet
  • Noise: not a constant barker (neighbours are close)
  • Heat tolerance: a normal-length nose and a coat that doesn't trap heat

10 breeds that suit apartment life

Breed Size Energy Heat note
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Small Low–medium Moderate; keep walks short in summer
Maltese Toy Low Keep coat trimmed
Havanese Small Medium Bred for a warm climate
Miniature Poodle Small Medium Low-shedding coat, keep clipped
Bichon Frisé Small Medium Keep coat trimmed
Italian Greyhound Small Medium Thin coat, handles heat better than most
Whippet Medium Medium (short bursts) Thin coat; sleeps a lot indoors
Miniature Schnauzer Small Medium Can be vocal; train early
Dachshund Small Medium Avoid stairs and jumping (long back)
Saluki Medium–large Medium Desert breed with high heat tolerance, but needs room to run

Popular breeds that need extra care in UAE heat

  • Flat-faced breeds (French Bulldog, Pug, English Bulldog, Shih Tzu): cute and apartment-sized, but at high risk of overheating. Keep summer walks very short and exercise them indoors.
  • Thick double coats (Husky, Malamute, Samoyed): need air-conditioning and indoor exercise most of the year.
  • High-energy working breeds (Malinois, Border Collie, German Shepherd): can live in apartments only with a lot of daily physical and mental work.

Before you get a dog in a UAE apartment

  • Check that your building and tenancy contract allow dogs.
  • Register, vaccinate and microchip your dog as required by your emirate's authorities.
  • Check the current UAE list of restricted dog breeds before choosing a breed.
  • Find a vet near you and a dog walker or daycare for busy days.

How to keep any apartment dog fit

  1. Short walks before about 7am and after sunset in summer
  2. 15–30 minutes a day on an indoor dog treadmill
  3. Scent games and food puzzles (see 9 indoor exercise ideas)
  4. Balance work on a balance disc or paw pods

For small and medium apartment dogs, the FITD Compact treadmill (110 × 52 × 120 cm) needs no electricity and fits a spare corner. For bigger dogs, see the Standard and Large Pro.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best small dog for hot weather?

Breeds with normal-length noses and light coats, such as the Italian Greyhound, Havanese or Whippet, cope better than flat-faced or thick-coated breeds. Every dog still needs shade, water and indoor exercise in a UAE summer.

Can a Husky live in a Dubai apartment?

It is possible with constant air-conditioning, early and late walks only, and lots of indoor exercise such as a treadmill, but it is a big commitment.
