Dog using a compact FITD treadmill indoors in a Dubai apartment

9 Indoor Exercise Ideas for Dogs in Dubai Apartments (That Work in Summer)

A dog that doesn't burn its energy will find its own way to use it: chewing, barking, zoomies and pulling on the lead. In Dubai and across the UAE, summer heat cuts most dogs' outdoor exercise to a few short toilet walks for months. These 9 ideas keep your dog fit and calm indoors, even in a small apartment.

How much exercise does your dog need?

Dog type Examples Daily exercise
Low energy French Bulldog, Shih Tzu, Pug 30–45 minutes, gentle
Medium energy Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Labrador 60–90 minutes
High energy / working Husky, German Shepherd, Malinois, Border Collie 90–120+ minutes, physical and mental

Mental work counts too: 15 minutes of sniffing and problem-solving can tire a dog as much as a 30-minute walk.

1. Treadmill walking

The closest thing to a real walk indoors. A self-powered dog treadmill lets your dog walk or trot at its own pace in an air-conditioned room, with no electricity and no noise for the neighbours. Start with 5 minutes and build to 20–30. Read our step-by-step treadmill training guide.

2. Find-it scent games

Hide treats around a room and say "find it". Make it harder by hiding them under cups, in boxes or on low shelves. Sniffing is calming and very tiring for dogs.

3. Snuffle mat or rolled towel

Scatter kibble into a snuffle mat or roll it into a towel. Dinner becomes a 10-minute brain workout instead of a 30-second gulp.

4. Food puzzles and stuffed toys

A KONG Classic stuffed with wet food and frozen overnight gives 20–40 minutes of quiet work.

5. Stairs in the building (carefully)

Slow walking up and down a few flights builds strength. Skip this for puppies, long-backed breeds and dogs with joint problems.

6. Tug of war with rules

Tug is great exercise when the dog learns to "drop it" on cue. Use a proper tug toy and stop before your dog gets over-excited.

7. Balance and core work

Standing on a balance disc or peanut ball builds core strength in short sessions. Trainers and rehab vets use the same tools.

8. Short trick sessions

Teach spin, paw, down-stay or "go to bed" in 5-minute sessions. Learning new things tires dogs mentally.

9. Indoor hide-and-seek

Ask your dog to stay, hide in another room and call once. It's recall practice and play in one.

A simple summer routine

  • Early morning: short walk before about 7am
  • Mid-morning: 15–20 minutes on the treadmill
  • Afternoon: scent game or food puzzle
  • Evening: trick training, then a short walk after sunset

Watch for heavy panting, and read the signs of dog heatstroke in the UAE so you know when to stop.

Frequently asked questions

Can a big dog live happily in a Dubai apartment?

Yes, if it gets enough daily physical and mental exercise. A treadmill plus scent games can replace much of the outdoor exercise that summer heat makes unsafe.

Is a treadmill noisy for neighbours?

Self-powered treadmills have no motor, so they are much quieter than electric ones. A rubber mat underneath reduces noise further.
